Quicky Computer Tips

  • Remove or disable programs that start automatically at boot-up.

  • If you open and close a lot of different programs you should reboot often.

  • Go to task manager and see what is running and the computer resources in use. Don’t let programs run in the background. (This goes for phones also.)

  • Get rid of trash, junk files and archive files no longer needed. Your computer needs at least 200–500MB of free space on the hard drive to be able to move and manage files.

  • Be sure you have enough RAM. If your computer has to swap information on the hard drive to get enough memory to run programs, it’s going to work slower.

  • Upgrade older computers to enable them to handle current software needs without slowing to a snail’s pace.

  • Be sure your power chord has the correct wattage.

  • Viruses, spyware and malware can slow down your computer, but this is generally the last thing to check. Use a virus checker/scanner then check computer speed.

  • Macs do get viruses; they are simply targeted less than PCs. Windows is on more machines and therefore a bigger, easier target for cybercriminals. You should always use caution with downloads and when clicking on links from unknown sources whether MAC or PC. No double-clicking attachments!

  • Microsoft has never released its own registry cleaner because it’s really not necessary. Going in to clean your registry (when you don’t know what you’re doing) can actually do serious damage.

  • Batteries DO NOT need to be dead before recharging in the hopes of making it last longer. Older Nickel-cadmium batteries suffer from what was called a “memory effect.” If discharged and recharged to the same point several times, they would remember that point in the future and not go further. Now lithium batteries don’t suffer from this memory effect. In fact, they function better with partial discharge instead of letting the battery run down to zero.
